Water Metering
A prepaid water meter, also known as a water prepayment meter,
is a device used to measure and control the consumption of water
in a prepaid manner. Unlike traditional water meters that
measure water usage and generate a bill at the end of a billing
cycle, prepaid water meters require users to make payments in
advance before they can access water.
Prepaid water meters provide a more efficient and convenient
method of water billing and consumption management and are often
used in situations where there is a need to closely monitor
water usage, promote conservation in other to curb wastage of
water.
There are different types of prepaid water meters available,
including:
-
Card Enabled Prepaid Water Meter: This meter uses a
smart card as a means of payment. Users load credit onto the
smart card and insert it into the meter to access water. The
meter deducts the appropriate amount of credit for the water
consumed.
-
STS Type Prepaid Water Meter: This meter makes use of a
meter and a Customer Interface Unit (CIU) or remote control.
It requires users to purchase tokens, typically in the form of
printed vouchers, from a designated outlet. The tokens are
then entered into the meter, allowing the user to access a
specific amount of water. It can allow for online purchase
thereby providing convenience for the end user.
-
GPRS Enabled Prepaid Water Meter:A GPRS (General Packet
Radio Service) meter, also known as a smart meter or remote
meter utilizes cellular network connectivity for data
transmission and communication.
-
AMR Type Prepaid Water Meter: This meter uses a
wireless communication technology to transmit data via a Data
Concentration Unit (DCU) from the meter to the utility's data
management system at regular intervals, such as every 30
minutes or once per day.
-
Ultrasonic Prepaid Water Meter: This type of water
meter uses ultrasonic technology to measure the flow rate and
volume of water passing through it. It operates by emitting
ultrasonic waves into the water flow and analyzing the changes
in the waves' frequency and time of flight as they travel
through the water. It doesn’t have any moving parts.
Prepaid Water Meters promote responsible water use, reduce
costs, improve revenue collection, and enhance efficiency in
water management. These advantages make them a viable option for
managing water resources and ensuring equitable distribution.
